Extractum Ginkgo Biloba (Egb 761) and its Place in theTreatment of Organic Mental Disorders

Extractum ginkgo biloba (Egb 761) is a selective extract from the leaves of the Ginkgo biloba treethis extract contains a number of substances which interfere in a favourable way with pathogene-tic chains of many organic cerebral disorders, manifested clinically as dementia. Egb 761 has e.g.a scavenger effect on free oxygen radicals, an effect on inhibition of thrombocyte aggregatingfactors (PAF), an inhibitory effect on ionotropic receptors of excitatory amino acids of the NMDAtype and other effects. The preparation is one of the nootropic substances. Egb 761 is a selectiveextract from which undesirable constitunets are eliminated, such as allergens. It is a well tolera-ted preparation. In psychiatric practice it is used in particular in the treatment of dementia, i.e.primarily degenerative dementia (Alzheimer’s disease and others) as well as vascular and someother symptomatic dementias.
