News Influence of ARNI on the Efficacy and Safety of Empagliflozin in the Treatment of Heart Failure with Reduced Ejection Fraction

Pharmacological inhibition of neprilysin and the AT1 receptor for angiotensin II (ARNI) through sacubitril/valsartan reduces cardiovascular (CV) mortality and the risk of hospitalization for heart failure. The same benefit has also been demonstrated with the use of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i), also known as gliflozins. A pre-specified sub-analysis of the EMPEROR-Reduced study evaluated whether the benefit of SGLT2i is also significant in patients treated with ARNI.

News A Brief History of Deep Vein Thrombosis Treatment – From Antiquity to the Present

Deep vein thrombosis is among the common diseases that have accompanied humanity since its inception. Due to the low specificity of its clinical presentation (in contrast to, for example, varicose veins of the lower limbs), however, the disease long went undescribed in literature. The first descriptions of deep vein thrombosis did not appear until the Middle Ages – and from that moment, the gradual development of its treatment began. We offer you a brief but remarkable historical excursion in three stages.

News Doc. Jitka Fricová: The biggest challenge remains the patient with unbearable chronic pain

Research findings are pushing the boundaries of optimal chronic pain treatment, including better prevention and reduced side effects of analgesics. Algological care is readily accessible in the Czech Republic, yet it faces limitations, such as the less manageable nature of unbearable pain, particularly neuropathic or oncologic. We briefly discuss the topic with the head physician of the Pain Treatment Center at the Department of Anesthesiology, Resuscitation, and Intensive Care Medicine, First Faculty of Medicine, Charles University, and General University Hospital in Prague, Doc. MUDr. Jitka Fricová, Ph.D.

News Diagnosis and Management of Interstitial Lung Processes Associated with Rheumatoid Arthritis

Interstitial lung processes (ILD) are common yet insufficiently diagnosed complications of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), significantly increasing the morbidity and mortality of patients. ILD can occur at any stage of RA, presenting a diverse clinical picture. Usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP) and nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) are the most common findings on high-resolution CT (HRCT). Some patients with RA-associated ILD may exhibit a progressive phenotype characterized by expanding fibrotic changes on HRCT, declining lung function, worsening respiratory symptoms, and early mortality. A recently published review summarizes strategies for screening, monitoring, and managing ILD in RA.
