News Experiences with treating PBC with obeticholic acid in Brno's CKTCH
MUDr. Libuše Husová, Ph.D., shared the current insights from the therapy of patients with primary biliary cholangitis (PBC) using obeticholic acid (OCA) gained at the Center for Cardiovascular and Transplantation Surgery in Brno (CKTCH) during the XLVIII May Hepatology Days.Source: Primary Biliary Cholangitis 22. 7. 2021News How to Most Effectively Delay Skeletal Events in Patients with Bone Metastases from Solid Tumors?
In a randomized Phase III study, the effectiveness of denosumab and zoledronic acid in preventing skeletal events in patients with multiple myeloma or solid tumors (excluding breast and prostate cancer) and bone metastases was evaluated. An ad hoc analysis of this study then involved only a subgroup of patients with solid tumors.Source: Prevention of Bone Events 12. 9. 2022News Fixed combinations of Enerzair® and Atecura® may improve asthma treatment
The newly approved fixed triple combination Enerzair® and the fixed dual combination Atectura® have demonstrated improvements in lung function and a reduction in exacerbations in previously uncontrolled asthma patients. Administering once daily using the Breezhaler® inhaler along with the possibility of connecting a digital aid aims, among other things, to facilitate usage and proper adherence to the treatment.Source: Asthma under control 24. 2. 2021News Compressive Therapy in Wound Treatment: Which Aids to Choose and How to Use Them Correctly?
If a patient is dealing with a chronic wound, it is necessary to support its healing with proper compressive therapy. The main goal is to reduce swelling and improve venous flow in the body. By applying compression immediately in the morning, before any movement, we prevent blood from pooling in the lower limbs. But be careful! It must be done with the correct technique.Source: Wound Healing 7. 12. 2021News Low Molecular Weight Heparin in an ECMO Patient − Case Study
Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has an irreplaceable role in intensive care medicine. In the context of preventing complications caused by blood clot formation, unfractionated heparin is most commonly used in patients on extracorporeal circulation. However, its administration can lead to complex coagulopathies, which may result in increased bleeding or, perhaps surprisingly, a higher frequency of blood clot formation. A unique case study recently presented by authors from Motol University Hospital in Prague demonstrates the safety and effectiveness of using low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) enoxaparin in this indication for a patient connected to ECMO for a very long duration (3 months), with several days even on two devices simultaneously.Source: Thromboprophylaxis 28. 11. 2023News Teriflunomide in the Treatment of RRMS: The Best Working Drug Is the One That the Patient Actually Takes
Teriflunomide is an oral disease-modifying drug (DMD) used in the therapy of relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis (RRMS). The authors of the cited American study assessed adherence to this treatment and subsequently the effect of adherence on the occurrence of RRMS relapses and the utilization of healthcare services during the first year following the initial prescription of teriflunomide.Source: Multiple Sclerosis 24. 4. 2023News A Look at Tongue and Its Care from the Perspective of Western and Traditional Chinese Medicine
The tongue is a valuable diagnostic tool used in both Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medicine. While the approaches to tongue care between these two medical systems differ significantly, both recognize the tongue's ability to reflect an individual's overall health. Although these approaches may seem contradictory, with proper application, they can complement each other.Source: Dental Care 6. 9. 2023News Lorlatinib as an Alternative to CNS Radiotherapy in Patients with NSCLC − Case Studies
Two remarkable case studies from authors at the Netherlands Cancer Institute Antoni van Leeuwenhoek in Amsterdam present patients with advanced NSCLC with metastatic CNS involvement. Treatment with crizotinib led to good control of pulmonary involvement but did not affect metastatic CNS involvement. The introduction of lorlatinib subsequently led to rapid improvement in neurological symptoms, which was also confirmed by CNS imaging.Source: Genetic Profile and Treatment of NSCLC 10. 2. 2020News Comparison of Efficacy and Safety of Unsaponifiable Soy and Avocado Oil and Chondroitin Sulfate in the Treatment of Knee Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is the most common joint disease in adult patients, with its prevalence increasing with age, and these issues most frequently affect the knee joint. In the treatment of knee osteoarthritis (gonarthrosis), the so-called symptomatically slow-acting drugs in the treatment of osteoarthritis (SYSADOA) are used, among which unsaponifiable soy and avocado oil or chondroitin sulfate are included. The study compared the efficacy and safety of these two drugs in a 6-month therapy of gonarthrosis.Source: Osteoarthritis Therapy 8. 4. 2020News Pertuzumab significantly extends the life of patients with metastatic breast cancer
The final results of the CLEOPATRA clinical trial show that patients with HER2-positive metastatic breast cancer achieve 8-year overall survival of 37% with the targeted treatment combination of pertuzumab + trastuzumab + docetaxel.Source: Breast Carcinoma 28. 4. 2020News What Benefits Does the Fixed Combination of Candesartan/Amlodipine Bring?
A relatively new fixed combination used in the treatment of hypertension is represented by candesartan/amlodipine, that is, a sartan and a calcium channel blocker. Its advantage compared to the combination of ACE inhibitor/calcium channel blocker is primarily the lower occurrence of side effects.Source: Sartans in the Treatment of Hypertension 9. 12. 2021News Enoxaparin in the Treatment of Pulmonary Embolism in a Morbidly Obese Patient – Case Report
The number of patients suffering from overweight and obesity has been steadily increasing in recent years. Obesity is one of the independent risk factors for thromboembolic disease. Treating thrombotic complications in obese patients poses a challenge not only because of the adjustments in anticoagulant dosing but also due to the lack of evidence regarding the safety and efficacy of higher doses of anticoagulants in this growing group of the population.Source: Thromboprophylaxis 4. 4. 2022News Can Thyroid Hormone Supplementation Reduce the Risk of Cognitive Disorders?
The recent systematic literature review presented below, published by authors from the California Institute of Behavioral Neurosciences and Psychology (CIBNP), focused, among other things, on potential associations between hypothyroidism and dementia and the impact of related therapeutic interventions in terms of improving cognitive functions.Source: Thyroid Disorders 25. 10. 2022News Treatment of HFrEF with Sacubitril/Valsartan Does Not Have to Be the ‘Last Resort’
The TRANSITION study has provided evidence on the safety and efficacy of administering sacubitril/valsartan to patients after acute decompensation of chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction of the left ventricle (HFrEF). A recent sub-analysis of its results suggested that not only patients with a long-known diagnosis but also those with newly diagnosed HFrEF could benefit from the treatment if the possibility of its prescription in this indication arises.Source: Chronic Heart Failure and Lipidology 9. 3. 2020
