News Improving treatment outcomes of HF with preserved ejection fraction according to JACC: What does the success of gliflozins mean for the future?
The Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) recently issued a scientific statement in which the authors thoroughly examined current knowledge on the epidemiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction of the left ventricle (HFpEF). Recent studies in this heterogeneous disease suggest the importance of carefully determining the HFpEF phenotype in a given patient based on pathophysiology, which enables better individualization of treatment. The authors also reflect on the success of gliflozins in treating HFpEF and how HFpEF pharmacotherapy can be further improved.Source: Heart Failure 4. 3. 2024News Bimekizumab in 3rd Line Biological Treatment After Risankizumab Failure – Case Study
The possibilities of biological therapy for severe forms of psoriasis are very broad today. Achieving remission or reducing disease activity by 90-100% from the baseline state (PASI 90-100) is highly probable, especially when using biological drugs from the IL-17 or IL-23 inhibitor groups. However, individually, patients may exhibit primary or secondary resistance even when using these preparations, necessitating a change in biological treatment. The following case study presents the case of a young man who achieved complete disease remission with bimekizumab after the previous failure of ixekizumab and risankizumab.Source: Psoriasis 22. 3. 2024News Overview of Current Treatment Options for MRSA-Induced Pneumonia
Pneumonia caused by methicillin-resistant strains of Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) remains a disease with high mortality requiring urgent treatment, whether it is a community-acquired or nosocomial infection. Italian authors published a review article at the beginning of 2022, describing the current available treatment modalities for this infection based on a literature survey.Source: Anti-Infectives 8. 7. 2022News Wireless Smart Devices Monitor Health by Detecting Sounds
The human body continuously emits various forms of acoustic-mechanical signals that can provide important information about its health. Researchers from Northwestern University in the USA have developed miniature wearable devices (wearables) capable of simultaneously detecting sounds from multiple locations on the body, thereby continuously monitoring the health of the wearer. In a pilot project, the devices were tested on prematurely born infants with breathing and intestinal motility disorders and on adults with chronic lung diseases.News Tiapride versus Haloperidol in the Therapy of Aggressiveness and Agitation in Elderly Patients with Cognitive Impairment
Acute restlessness, agitation, and aggression can be associated with psychiatric disorders but also be manifestations of somatic illnesses. Psychomotor agitation combined with disorientation is typical, for example, in older individuals with cognitive impairments. The primary goal of therapy is to calm the patient, most often using antipsychotics. The clinical study presented below compared the efficacy and safety of the antipsychotics haloperidol and tiapride versus placebo in patients with acute agitation and aggression who were diagnosed with mild to moderate cognitive impairment.Source: Viral infections 19. 1. 2023News Efficacy and Safety of Dupilumab in the Treatment of Severe Asthma Insufficiently Controlled by Standard Therapy – Current Clinical Practice Data
If severe bronchial asthma with type 2 inflammation is insufficiently controlled by combined maintenance therapy, dupilumab – a recombinant monoclonal antibody inhibiting the signaling pathway of interleukins 4 and 13 – can be added. What is its efficacy in clinical practice? We summarize findings from 3 recent retrospective studies.News Limits of Glycated Hemoglobin and the Importance of Other Glycated Proteins
Glycated hemoglobin is a gold standard in the diagnosis and management of diabetes treatment. However, its disadvantages include numerous factors that can cause false increases or decreases in its levels. Therefore, the scientific community is also interested in researching other glycated proteins that could be used in diabetes control. So, what should we keep in mind when collecting glycated hemoglobin?Source: Modern Treatment of Diabetes 17. 2. 2022News Summary of Czech Recommendations for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Schizophrenia in Children and Adolescents 2022
In June 2022, the Psychiatric Society of the Czech Medical Association JEP updated its recommendations for the diagnosis and treatment of schizophrenia in children and adolescents. This is the first online version, which will allow for faster implementation of new findings important for clinical practice and decision-making by state institutions. We bring you a summary of the key points of these recommendations.Source: Modern Treatment of Schizophrenia 21. 2. 2023News Bacterial Biofilm as a Complication of Respiratory Disease Treatment
One of the unique characteristics of certain microorganisms is their ability to form organized communities enveloped in extracellular polymeric matrix and firmly attached to a solid surface or interphase or forming aggregates, collectively referred to as biofilm. Clinically, the major issue is the formation of pathogenic and conditionally pathogenic organisms' biofilm on tissues (such as respiratory tracts) or the surfaces of various medical devices (including catheters and implants), as it represents a dangerous complication leading to the development of chronic, recurrent, and scarcely treatable conditions.Source: Cough Therapy 28. 11. 2023Články časopisu How Do Courts Set Health Policy?
