Overview

Ulbrichtová R., Švihrová V., Tatarková M., Sovičová M., Hudečková H., Baška T.: Burnout syndrome: the border between mental stress and occupational disease Burnout syndrome is an increasingly discussed phenomenon in relation to work-related stress. Its understanding has undergone significant historical development — from the Karoshi phenomenon studied in Japan in the 1980s to the first professional description by Herbert Freudenberger in 1974. In 2019, the World Health Organization included burnout syndrome into the International Classif ication of Diseases (ICD-10, code Z73.0; ICD-11, code QD8) because of chronic, unmanaged occupational stress negatively affecting health. Current research shows that burnout syndrome is more serious than previously assumed and its prevalence is on an upward trend, driven by the COVID-19 pandemic as well as digitalization. At present, most European Union countries do not recognize burnout syndrome as an occupational disease due to the absence of standardized and challenging diagnostic procedures.
