Overview
The history of neurology at the German University in Prague remains a relatively neglected part of the history of the field. This review traces its development from the shared roots in the Prague asylum and internal medicine departments, through the establishment of the German psychiatric department, to the gradual emancipation of neurology during the first third of the twentieth century. Particular attention is paid to the school of Arnold Pick and its clinicopathological research on aphasia, apraxia, dementias and other disorders of higher cerebral functions, as well as to the work of Otto Pötzl, Eduard Gamper and their collaborators. Under Gamper, neurology became an increasingly autonomous component of the department, with a separately located neurological ward from 1934 and plans for further development. The review shows that Czech and German neurology and psychiatry, although academically separate, operated within a shared environment, partly the same patient population, and maintained documented personal and professional contacts. The development of the Prague German neuropsychiatric school was profoundly disrupted by Gamper’s death in 1938 and the subsequent Nazi racial persecution, which removed which removed from the department most of its professors and lecturers. The post-war dissolution of the German University then brought the institution to a definitive end.
