Overview

Syphilis is a chronic disease, transmitted almost exclusively by sexual contact, and also exceptionally transplacentary or by blood transfusion, which is caused by a spirochete Treponema pallidum. The uniqueness of transmission by blood transfusion is due mainly to the low resistance of pathogenic treponemas to survive in the environment and especially fresh and not frozen products are risky. For the clinical diagnosis of syphilis in the Czech Republic by Decree Ministry of Health No. 306/2012 Coll. made compulsory examination at the same time treponemal and nontreponemal test. For the screening of blood donors is sufficient to perform the treponemal test (Decree. Ministry of Health No. 143/2008 Coll.). In the Czech Republic for this purposes TPHA tests CMIA immunochemical tests are frequently introduced. In the past two years, the world and domestic market was supplied by two brand new treponemal screening tests for syphilis: TPHA Screen Immucor and Elecsys®Syphilis f. Roche. The aim of the article is to describe and evaluate these tests. Based on the validation studies with blood donors and a set of positive samples from the NRL for syphilis State Institute of Health, authors state, that each of the two tests are suitable for routine testing of blood donors.
