Childhood vulvovaginitis

Overview

Vulvovaginitis is the most common gynecological problem of the child, mainly in so called rest period. The child in this period is susceptible, because the lack of estrogen results in the vaginal wall being thin, without glycogen a lactobacilli and with a neutral pH. We detect in this period mainly bacteria from the colon, but we see very often pathogens like group A beta hemolytic streptococcus or Haemophilus influenzae. For the right diagnosis we use samples from vaginal wall for bacterial cultivation by cotton swab, we need for the correct sample vaginoscopy, because without it we can obtain smear from the vaginal orifice, when there is normally mix of bacteria. During puberty because of the increase level of hormones are pathogens caused vulvovaginitis the same as in adult women. The best diagnostic method in this period is using of pH indicator, amine test or native microscopically examination. Treatment of the vulvovaginitis is based on local antibiotic inserted to vagina in the form of the cream or suppositories, we don´t use oral antibiotic, because of the high risk of relaps of this disease.
