COPD – news in diagnostics and treatment

Overview
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one of the most common respiratory diseases. The greatest risk factor for COPD is cigarette smoking. The new international recommendation for the classification, diagnosis and treatment of COPD is brought by GOLD 2017. New recommendations are focused on respiratory symptoms of the disease. The main goal of treating stable COPD is to reduce the symptoms and the risk of exacerbations. This is related to improving the quality of life, slowing down disease progression, increasing physical activity tolerance, preventing acute exacerbations, prolonging life. Treatment of COPD requires an individual and multidisciplinary approach. At the terminal COPD stage, it is important to decide on the limits of further care in time.
