Overview

Metals belong to the most common proven causes of contact allergies. Beside typical eczematous changes of the skin in the site of contact with metalic accessories, other skin or systemic reactions occur in people with the metals in the oral cavity or with metalic implants in the body. Patch tests are used to prove the delayed-type of hypersensitivity. Author describes a case of a 75-year old man with titanium knee endoprosthesis implantation complicated by a long lasting imflammation. Patch tests proved contact allergy to titanium. The contact allergy to titanium is diagnosed rarely but it is advisable to test it when complications occur after the metal implantation or before planned operation in patients with positive history of allergy to metals.
