Overview

Organ transplantation is associated with the decrease in bone mass and increased incidence of low-energy fractures, whether in consequence of the previous illness or anti-rejection treatment and post-transplantation complications. All patients after organ transplant should be examined for possible bone involvement and appropriately treated. The basic measures to reduce the bone loss following transplantation primarily include, apart from the general rules for osteoporosis prevention, regulation of calcium phosphate metabolism, vitamin D insufficiency, secondary hyperparathyroidism, and reduction of the cumulative dose of glucocorticoids. Individualized antiresorptive treatment is suitable for patients at risk for osteoporotic fracture and/or decrease in bone density, despite the support treatment with calcium and vitamin D.
