Overview

The role of a dermatovenereologist is to diagnose, treat and prevent sexually transmitted diseases (STD). Dermatovenereologists provide follow-up care, i.e. check-ups after the treatment and contact tracing, i.e. targeted examination of contacts and sources of infection. Patients can visit dermatologists directly, without prior recommendation by a general practitioner or other healthcare professional. The aim of this article is to provide an overview of sexually transmitted diseases and summarize the current legally binding regulations and guidelines of the Ministry of Health regarding the mandatory reporting, follow-up and contact tracing and also points out the role and the responsibility of gynecologist as a most likely physician of first contact with the disease in women.

Key words:
dermatovenerologist – gonorrhea – sexual transmitted disease – syphilis
